Smokers are not immune to the often-outrageous claims made about natural products. Chromium is one of them. Here is some information that might apply to you:
• Chromium can be added to the list of supplements that interact with levothyroxine (Synthroid, others). New research shows that taking chromium picolinate 1000 mcg with levothyroxine 1000 mcg reduces levothyroxine levels by about 17%. Researchers suspect that chromium binds levothyroxine in the gut and reduces absorption. Keep in mind that calcium and iron can also reduce levothyroxine absorption. Take levothyroxine at least 30 minutes before or 3-4 hours after taking these supplements. Ask yourself if you really need to take chromium (diabetes MAY be a reason but I can think of no other legit reasons right now as it does NOT work for weight loss, etc.) Also, remember that chromium, even in small amounts, could be carcinogenic. As a smoker you have enough problems, why add to them!
