Radon is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, according to EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) estimates. Overall, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Radon is responsible for about 21,000 lung cancer deaths every year. About 2,900 of these deaths occur among people who have never smoked.
As a smoker you are increasing your risk DRAMATICALLY for lung cancer if you live in a home with radon. In some states testing any home on purchase (a very simple procedure whereby a canister is left open for a period of time centrally in a home and then it is sent for analysis) is mandated and in other places (as in Arizona where I live) nothing is required putting millions at risk. The misconception that radon is an issue only in homes with basements is incorrect- any hoe is a risk as the gas and radiation can break through cracks in the foundation.Radon is naturally occurring and the problem can be easily resolved with the right kind of venting.
